Burnt Umber

An iron oxide, similar to the ochres and siennas, but containing manganese dioxide as well as hydrous ferric oxide.  The ideal umber has a warm, brown mass-tone with a green undertone.  As with the Siennas, Umbers should be transparent and well-suited to glazing.   Burnt Umber has been ‘calcined’ or roasted.
