Prior to the advent of both Zinc White and more recently Titanium White, Flake White was the standard white used by artists through the world from classical times. Though lacking in the opacity of Titanium White or the clean stark whiteness of Zinc White, Flake White, nonetheless, offers the following advantages: it has a fast, thorough drying rate, producing a paint film that is very durable and has good flexibility. Flake White has a somewhat firm consistency but is known for the long, flowing, “ropy” mark commonly made as it comes off the brush. The use of safflower oil reduces the tendency to yellow, common in whites ground in Linseed Oil.
