Originally made from the ink of the cuttle fish (or squid) as well as other species of cephalopods. The resulting colour shows high opacity and strong tinting strength. Due to poor lightfastness, it has been replaced with mixture of Carbon black and an Iron Oxide, both of which are highly lightfast as well as a good match for the optical and working properties of the original.
