The historical Indigo (or Woad) was originally a dye made from the fermented leaves of the plant, Indigofera tinctura. For use as a pigment, it wasn’t “laked” or precipitated onto an inert base; rather it was pounded directly into powder. The historical colour was only moderately lightfast, and has since been replaced by contemporary pigments that can match its dense, black-blue tone. |
