This pigment begins as Ultramarine Blue, which is mixed with an ammonia compound and then heated. The result is a red-shade violet that shares the same physical and optical properties as ultramarine blue: it’s lightfast, deep in tone, fairly transparent, and (in water colour) it flocculates (an electro-chemical response in which pigments clump together in an effect that is similar to granulation).
