Essdee British Scraperboard and Accessories

Originating in Britain and France in the 19th century, scratchboard, or scraperboard, was used to create detailed tonal works similar to engraving and very high in contrast. Made of a thin layer of white kaolin clay covered in black India ink, scratchboard is designed to be cut and scraped into with a sharp tool, thereby revealing the white layer beneath the ink. Scrubbing, crosshatching, and stippling are all excellent techniques for adding texture. Colors can be added anytime in the process, with transparent inks or watercolors, and the scratchboard medium as a whole is perfect for virtually any form of line work, from fine art to illustration, comics and advertising!
